"While the possibility of socially engineering backdoors in critical software seems like an indictment of open-source projects, it’s not exclusive to open source and could happen anywhere. In fact, the ability for the engineer to discover this backdoor before it was shipped was only possible due to the open nature of the project.” The Other Players Who Helped (Almost) Make the World’s Biggest Backdoor Hack

In most of the world, it is tough to explain free software and open source. It is like that Ursula K. Le Guin quote, about the inescapable power of capitalism, and how difficult to imagine an alternative to this power, in its time as difficult as it was to imagine an escape from the divine right of kings. But in Gaza, before the Al Aqsa Flood, the expression of this power was different. Capitalism was present, but it was not all powerful. It was easy to imagine an alternative, because Gaza, a self-contained enclosure, was forcefully cut off from the market forces of rest of the world. In Gaza, to teach people about free software and open source hardware, was to teach them how to survive. Because by accessing open repositories, even people with no capital could build a tech scene, could develop new technology. This was Mohammed Abu Matar's life work, which he has had to interrupt now as the boundaries restricting the entrance of the outside forces into Gaza have been pierced. I want everyone who has ever contributed to open source hardware and software, to consider reaching out with a donation to Mohammed and to Gaza, to let them know they are not alone: gofundme.com/f/protect-an-open

When an ActivityPub server issues a follow-request to another ActivityPub server on behalf of a user, there is currently no space in the protocol for any kind of "this follow is on behalf of a user from a corporate network" kind of field.
There's not even a user-agent to specify it's it's Mastodon or Misskey or whatever making the request.
If we're going to engineer this place for consent then we're going to need better options than just "Accept follow request by default" and and "User individually vets every follow-request"
Seems like people want to be able to specify that follow-requests should be accepted by default from some software/networks but turned into vet-every-follow-request if the user asking to follow is using Wordpress plugin or Threads or A Bluesky Bridge.
"Accept only Mastodon requests by default, let me verify Misskey and Soapbox users, but deny Threads and Nostr bridges"
is quite a complex demand from a user. What user-interface would people like to see for that?

Silicon Valley tech bros and GamerGate etc are in the news again. It has been almost exactly five years since I worked at Uber in any capacity so I may not have the clearest perspective anymore, but would like to say that in a comparison of the argument that I was disliked there because of 1) the fact that I was consistently harassed for being female bodied or 2) that I was somehow responsible for the failure of Uber's self driving division as a Software Engineer II I would like to argue option 2 is clearly ridiculous
